Orange-pineapple juice, strawberry-banana-kiwi juice, pomegranate-guava-passion fruit juice....if you can imagine it, they can create it! That's right, warm weather has arrived here in Israel and that means one (of many) things....juice bars are in full force. Forget Starbucks on every corner, here you will find a freshly squeezed juice stand at every intersection awaiting to quench your thirst as a respite from the heat. A healthier option (if you ask me) as compared to the abundance of ice cream and frozen yogurt shops that have also opened their doors as a competitive source of temptation to soothe the rising temperatures.
The combination of fresh fruit and iced blenders seem to call your name as you walk by the juice bar:
Next, the decision has been made: you've got to have one. Now, you must only decide what size you want and which sort of fruit concoction your taste buds are craving today:
And voile.....just seconds later, a cool and refreshing smoothie is yours to enjoy and gulp down:
It is arguable which juice bar is the "best" one in each city, but here in Jerusalem, story has it that there are a few favorites. Notably, I've repeatedly heard that three main places are worth a visit. First, there is Tutti Frutti (located on 23 Ben Yehuda Street) near where Ben Yehuda Street meets King George Street. This place has called upon my senses many a time. Then, there is the more traditional smoothie type shop (similar to Jamba Juice or Smoothie King in the states) called Re:Bar (click here to find a location near you). I happen to like the one on Emek Refaim in the German Colony. Lastly, legend has it that the poolside cafe at the King David Hotel has some juice concoctions and smoothies to die for while enjoying a warm breeze out by the pool. I've definitely got to put that one on my list.
I was never a big juice fan prior to moving to Israel, but with the availability of so many enticing treats around me on a constant basis, it's certainly hard to resist. Which juice concoction are you craving today?
If you have any suggestions for your favorites juice bars in Jerusalem or in Israel, please let me in on the secret. Same applies for your favorite cool concoctions that I simply must try. I don't know about you, but now I'm definitely in the mood for a freshly squeezed fruit smoothie!
