Stop whatever you are doing! We're going to veer slightly off track today from our schedule topic of reviewing my recent travels in Europe. A lot has been going on and I'm playing a continual game of catch up. If you don't have plans yet today or tomorrow (and you happen to be a local), it is not too late to look into attending the annual festival Houses From Within which will be going on between November 4-5, 2011 here in Jerusalem.
This annual festival began taking place locally in 2007, following up on original acts in New York and London. The two-day open house festival will showcase over a hundred interesting homes, public buildings, historical monuments and unique apartments, all distinct in their architectural design, free-of-charge and open to the public at large.
Several of the tours require you to sign up for a spot in order to take the tour. Although many are already full, there are still quite a few available. The majority, anyhow, require you to just show up and wait for a tour to begin. If you go explore the festival's website (see here), you will see that you have over 100 options from which to choose. So, if you are an artsy type of person who can appreciate this type of event, then there is sure to be something to fit the bill.
I may have been late in the game to discovering this event, but it is not too late just yet. Jerusalem is a particularly exciting place to be able to enter buildings and homes that are usually off limits in order to appreciate their unique architecture and culture amidst such a historical city.
If you happen to make it out to one of the tours today, enjoy what you see. Whatever else you might be doing, enjoy your weekend! Unbelievably, we already have our second guest in town and we've only be back two short weeks, so I'm sure we'll be in for a nice time.
